Avila (also Avila de los Caballeros), is a city in central Spain, which is the capital of the province of the same name, included in the region of Castilla-León; it is located at an altitude of 1,126 m in the Adaja River valley, northwest of Madrid.
The city, a tourist and commercial center, is home to a thriving livestock farming industry. It preserves numerous vestiges of medieval architecture, including a Gothic cathedral, completed in the 14th century, and the entirely preserved dark granite walls, dating back to around the 11th century, which surrounded the old city with imposing fortifications.
